The Very Hungry Caterpillar .

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Written and Illustrated by Eric Carle

A new born caterpillar gets very hungry and eats throughout the book, at the end he wraps himself up in a cocoon eats his way out of that and turns into a big beautiful butterfly.  Carle illustrates bright colors to keep children drawn into the book and reinforces a counting lesson by pair fruit in numerical    order. This book is a great lesson for kids K-2.

While teaching with this book I could emphasize counting and adding, also the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly.

One activity  that I can use would be to have the children group up and retell the story to me and to the other students. This would help to let the kids understand sequencing, counting and retelling stories.

Another activity  would be to have the kids count with the caterpillar. Count with the caterpillars spots, color them with specified colors and to learn new spelling words.
